The Horsemen: Capturing the Graceful Spectacle of Andalusia’s La Saca de las Yeguas
Being spellbound in the spur of the moment.
For me one of the defining elements of art: When a topic previously of little interest is revealed in such a way that I drop all other thoughts and offer all of my attention to the work before my eyes.
Exactly this happened this morning in a three-minute clip from the documentary The Horsemen by Glen Milner. NOWNESS opened the curtain on this for me. Is the definition of a movie trailer That which leaves trails of interest that lead you to the referenced work?
Brilliant, simple (the very best combo) graphic time line of fashion history. Watch it weave together right before your eyes in moments on one of my favorite cultural sites, Nowness.

Salmon & Poached Egg Salad
When it’s 100+ outside, it’s not only refreshing to eat a clean, clear salad, it can balance us when the heat throws us for a loop. On June 30, 2013 the above was the prescription for this Pitta. That and a crazy-fragrant Torrentes by Alamos.
There were a bit more of bits on the plate (no, neither the salmon nor the egg were …tomato red), mostly sourced from the backyard and Paul’s Produce in Sonoma.
I’m happy to share the various and sundry ingredients, but you better ask me soon. I rarely remember the exact ingredients of impromptu culinary creations. (Maybe more salmon will help me there?)
(not sure what the new blue business is right center)
Soundtrack: Sigur Ros’ Havarf- Heim
Ok, so I’m jaded. Jaded by the sights and sounds of Sigur Ros, and the fact that I will be in their atmospheric, misty midst in a mere six days. My show is stopped, my breath taken, and my belief in the universe as limitless is confirmed. Listen: Samskeyti segued into Staralfur. Damned if I’ve ever heard–or seen–anything more sublime. Psst to Sigur Ros: Catch The Bay Lights when you’re in the Bay Area April 15-16.
Soundtrack: Mercedes Bahleda’s Domine Fil Unigenite. I hear–and feel–Heaven every time this plays. (Thanks, Erich Schiffmann, for introducing me to her music.) When I recommended it today to a fellow “lover of the gloaming” blogger, I just about did a cartoon slapping of my hand to my forehead: Now, this is the perfect accompaniment to The Bay Lights.
When the lights came on to Domine this evening I saw Heaven in their shimmer. They flicker like candle glow. Bahleda makes The Lights a Heaven. And on such a pedestrian (I know, I know) thing as a bridge for cars…for Heaven’s sake.
Maria (of Accelerated Stall) nominated me for the Super Sweet Blogging Award ~
Maria, thanks for the nomination. I highly recommend reading Maria’s marvelous marveling of things that go What?*&#! in the night. Or by laundromat, plane, or tuk tuk…
Fluff and Fold, or Sounds of Cambodia.
The rules to this award (for me and all nominees) are:
Without further ado let’s roll out the questions:
1. Cookies or Cake?
Cake. That texture, the mouth feel. Velvety cake, soft frosting, all dressed up and ready to go in your mouth…worth the price of admission of calories alone. And they have boxes.
2. Chocolate or Vanilla?
I love Sarah Vaughan. Adore her. I could get lost in the sound of her voice… a whole weekend of Sarah is not a sliver too much. But that doesn’t mean I can’t have a lost weekend with Ella Fitzgerald. Loving Ella is not mutually exclusive from savoring Sarah. Oh. Wait. I’m appealing to the wrong sense. I love chocolate ice cream. Adore it. I could have a lost…
3. What is your favorite sweet treat?
Princess cake. Marzipan, raspberry filling, soft pastry creamy stuff, all tucked in with the aforementioned velvety layers of (sponge!) cake. And it’s pretty. In pink and green.
4. When do you crave sweet things the most?
When I write about sweets. I’m very visual, so I have to be sitting in front of what I’m writing about. Cue: “Princess cake” in the voice of Homer Simpson. This can make for a sticky keyboard, and my impairment (the one that requires that I see what of I write) can be a very expensive handicap. Right now I want to write about…A San Francisco Giants game with a side Gilroy Garlic Fries in the foreground.
5. If you had a sweet nickname, what would it be?
This is going to be the most fattening question I’ve ever answered… (See above.)
Okay, question no. 5 is going to take some time. Hopefully a few of my 13 nominees for Super Sweet Blogging will share plates of their no. 3 answers with me to help with this dessert numerology.
